Game Development Never Ceased At Epic, According To Sweeney

Many fans within the gaming community believed Epic Games, the creator of the Unreal Engine and Gears of War developer, to have stepped away from game development completely. Their upcoming free-to-play title Fortnite disappeared off the radar for quite some time, at least until recently. Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney has assured everyone that Epic never left game development.

In a recent interview with Edge, Sweeney spoke on how Epic is working on a “high end next-generation title,” which we wrote about briefly earlier this week. He also spoke about Fortnite. Sweeney said:

You look at what’s on people’s radars right now then you might say ‘Epic’s going to just be an engine company now. But you can look back at 2006 or 2008 or 2011, you might have said ‘Epic’s going to just be a games company now’ – it’s just constantly pingponging back between those two.

The industry’s changing — this generation it seems like there are about a third of the number of triple-A titles in development across the industry as there was last time around. Each one seems to have about three times the budget of the previous generation. I think we’re heading towards a future where triple-A is the minority.

Are you excited for some new titles from Epic Games? It’s nice to see they’re hard at work in the game development field. We can’t wait to see what Fortnite brings and this next mysterious title.
