The Wii U is soon going to be upon us – it’s getting closer and closer each day, but many people are still undecided on what version of the console to get and what games to pick up when they get their brand new console. This article takes a look at some of the top games which are going to be released this holiday season and a few that will be out in the future.

Games coming in time for the Holidays

These games all have release dates before or during this Holiday season.

New Super Mario Bros U
US Release Date: November 13 | Europe Release Date: November 30

It’s not a Nintendo console without a new Mario game, right? Super Mario Bros U is the latest in the Mario game series and for the first time the game is in HD. I am sure many of us would have much preferred a new 3D Mario game, but this one is looking like a lot of fun.

Much like Super Mario Bros on the Wii, New Super Mario BrosWii U will be a great multi player game and during multi player the person using the GamePad can help the other players out. With that being said its worth mentioning that in single player this game makes no use of the Wii U GamePad which really is quite surprising and somewhat disappointing! I am sure though that this will not reduce the countless hours of fun this classic game will bring!

ZombiU
US Release Date: November 13 | Europe Release Date: November 30

This is a first person shooter, aimed at the more mature gamer and out of all the games that are being released this holiday season it looks like this could be the one that makes the best use of the Wii U GamePad.

The GamePad will be used to perform a multitude of tasks, including things like selecting your weapon, using your weapon, interacting with your surrounds (opening doors etc.). One interesting concept in this game is that your character dies; they die for good – meaning that you will need to take control of a new character. ZombiU sounds like it also has one really cool story that sounds like its going to be a lot of fun. ZombiU is being released in some countries as a special edition with the Wii U console.

Batman Arkham City: Armored Edition
US Release Date: November 13 | Europe Release Date: November 30

This is like the ultimate version of Batman Arkham City that was released last year on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC. This version of Arkham City includes all of the DLC including the extra chapter added to the story as well as all the extra skins and missions.

Arkham City: Armoured Edition is going to make great use of the Wii U GamePad. Even if you have played through this game on a different console this version will be very exciting for you. All of Batman’s gadgets make use of the Wii U GamePad and the interface they have for the GamePad makes it look like a gadget you would find Batman himself using! For example the remote control batarang is manually controlled by moving the GamePad making use of the gyroscope controls. Batman and Catwoman also benefit from powered up suits that let them do more damage than ever before in this special Armored Edition of Arkham City for the Wii U.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
US Release Date: November 18 | Europe Release Date: November 30

I’m sure every gamer has heard of Call of Duty, it’s Activisions best selling franchise. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is the sequel to Call of Duty: Black Ops which was released back in 2010. This game is the first in the whole Call of Duty franchise to introduce future warfare technology, plus the ability to mold your own game – your choices will determine which path you take through the game, so it’s quite a big update on previous Call of Duty games in it’s own right, but, the Wii U Console and Gamepad make the game look even more appealing!

The screen on the GamePadcan not only be used to display the radar / map and activate score streaks, but you will also be able to change your players load-out during the game!

Assassin’s Creed III
US Release Date: November 13 | Europe Release Date: November 30

This is the fifth game in the Assassin’s Creed series and will be the third numbered title. The game is set mostly during 1753 to 1783, but also includes a ‘present day’ setting in which you must prevent the 2012 apocalypse. It definitely looks like the most exciting Assassin’s Creed game yet.

There hasn’t been much word yet on how this game will make use of the Wii U’s Gamepad, from the pictures I have seen so far, the screen on the Gamepad has only been used as a screen for the minimap – I hope that there is more use for the screen than just that.

Just Dance 4
US Release Date: November 18 | Europe Release Date: November 30

Just Dance 4 is a rhythm and dance game where the player is expected to dance in tune to the music being played on the game. By keeping in tune with the music the player earns points which lets them advance onto the next level. This installment of the game has over 40 new tracks which range from the current chart-topping hits to classic dance tracks. Whatever your favorite genre of music, you’ll find something to dance to in this game.

This is another game which adds a new dimension to the game for whichever player is using the Gamepad. The player operating the Gamepad will be able to switch the dance routines being performed in real-time; they can create choreographs and create playlists for the other players to follow.

Lego City: Undercover
US Release Date: November 18 | Europe Release Date: November 30

Lego City: Undercover is a huge open-world game (similar to the GTA series) in which you play an Undercover detective completing various missions around the city – which looks a bit like a Lego version of San Francisco. You can run, drive and even fly around the city, and the Wii U GamePad controller adds an extra level of fun to the game…

The GamePad is used much like a real gadget, you can receive mission updates on it, place waypoints on your city map, scan for clues and criminals and more.  There are more than 100 vehicles for you to use in the game, and you can even go ‘undercover’ with a number of great disguises.

This game looks like a lot of fun, and it’s going to be released in time for Christmas! So we’ll get a chance to enjoy it over the holidays.

Games coming after the Holidays

These games wont be around in time for the holidays, but they will be released shortly after!

Rayman Legends
US Release Date: 2013 | Europe Release Date: 2013

Rayman Legends for the Wii U carries on the same style of gameplay which we saw in the Rayman Origins game, so if you were a fan of that, then you will more than likely enjoy this installment on the Wii U too. As well as Rayman, Globox and the Teensies, there is also a new playable character for this game – Barbara. Barbara is a redheaded viking who yields an axe to fight the baddies and a winged helmet which lets her fly short distances, it’s nice to see a new main character in the game.

Rayman Legends is another game which lets one of the players use the Wii U GamePad to interact with the game in a different way. In Rayman Legends you get the ability to control Murfy with the Wii U GamePad. Murfy can help Rayman in a number of different ways, including fighting the bad guys and collecting Lums. There are a number of levels in the game which require good co-operation with Murfy and the main characters in order to continue in the game.

Legend of Zelda Wii U
Release Date: TBA

The tech demo blew many of us away, but, truth be told, we know next to nothing about Zelda Wii U – all we do know is that without a doubt Zelda Wii U is coming. The date which it is going to be released is really all down to guess work, but a Nintendo console without a Zelda game just would not be right. Many gamers have high hopes that the game will use the same visual style that the tech demo at E3 did, as that looked awesome.

Super Smash Bros Wii U
Release Date: TBA

This is another game that we know is coming as it has been confirmed to be in development. The Smash Bros games are always a ton of fun. A big part of the fun is speculating on the roster. Smash Bros Brawl surprised us with Sonic the Hedgehog and Solid Snake. So who knows what Nintendo has up there sleeves for this one. Also the Wii U promises to have much improved online capabilities meaning that this game should be a great online multi player game.

Mario Kart U
Release Date: TBA

While not yet announced, we all know that the Wii U will have a Mario Kart title. I felt Mario Kart 7 was the best in the series so far. Its online interface was much better than that of Mario Kart Wii so hopefully Nintendo will make this easy to play online. I really hope that with this instalment Nintendo open up the roster a little and include people from other Nintendo franchises such as Link, Kirby and Samus just to name a few.

There are many more games coming for the Wii U, but these are just a few of the hottest and most anticipated games so far! What game are you looking forward to the most? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
